Cilia

(SILL-ee-ah)

  1. Short hairlike processes or structures that are cellular extensions capable of motility in a jointly coordinated back and forth movement. Coral use their cilia for various purposes, including the transport of particulate matter across the surface of the polyp.
  2. Short, hair-like, undulating outgrowths of certain cells that can produce locomotion of the movement of fluids (such as mucus).
